Hand and Upper Extremity Pain
There are 206 bones in the adult body, and 27 of them are in the hand and wrist. Frequent usage creates constant opportunities for injury. Because they can inhibit normal functions of the hand and adversely impact daily activities, these injuries can be particularly debilitating.
Hand and wrist trauma can also be the result of degenerative or acquired diseases. Common conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, bone fractures, sprains, and a host of other issues. Along with the hand and wrist area, there are also numerous elbow problems and conditions that can occur. They include tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.
Most disorders of the hand and wrist can be treated non-surgically with splints, injections, or physical therapy. However, some traumatic injuries can cause nerve, artery, vein, muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint cartilage problems. In these cases, more invasive treatments such as joint replacement may be required.
Many elbow conditions can be treated conservatively without surgery. Standard surgical procedures, as well as arthroscopy, are suitable for more advanced injuries. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that permits the orthopedist to treat the problem using small incisions. This usually results in less pain and an earlier return to normal activities.
