Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is an advanced medical scanning technique that allows for health care professionals to make an accurate diagnosis of a range of issues from chronic diseases to tumors to abnormalities in the musculoskeletal system. At Sarasota Orthopedic Associates, we use MRI scans as part of our efforts to provide comprehensive diagnostic services.
MRI Scans for the Musculoskeletal System
MRI scans are non-invasive, painless, and only last about forty minutes. Our physicians may recommend an MRI to better diagnose lumbar spine conditions, wrist injuries, knee conditions, foot and ankle injuries, stress fractures, soft tissue conditions, and other chronic or acute conditions. An MRI scan is helpful in these cases because it allows our orthopedists to see the soft tissue structures of a joint, such as tendons, ligaments, muscles, cartilage, and the joint capsule, which are not seen on a plain X-ray image.
The Benefits of MRI Scans
With more accurate imaging, we provide evidence-based diagnoses and screenings. The series of images produced by the MRI scan can be analyzed from different angles, allowing our orthopedists to interpret abnormalities from every angle, which is a capability not offered by other imaging services that can reduce the risk of unnecessary surgery. An MRI scan can also identify an issue much quicker than traditional diagnostic methods, leading to faster treatment start times. We often recommend an MRI scan coupled with our other services for comprehensive diagnostics. Our MRI services are available to our patients, but many other area physicians refer their patients to us because of our state-of-the-art equipment.
