Nomen Azeem, MD - First in Sarasota/Manatee Counties to use St. Jude Medical BurstDR stimulation supporting patients with chronic pain

Sarasota, FL, October 26, 2016 – Nomen Azeem, MD of Sarasota Orthopedic Associates is the first physician in Sarasota and Manatee Counties to use BurstDR™ stimulation from St. Jude Medical to support the treatment of patients suffering from chronic pain. According to Dr Azeem, "BurstDR stimulation is a new, superior spinal cord stimulation option for patients that has been shown to provide less pain, less suffering, and less therapy maintenance."

BurstDR stimulation, exclusive to St. Jude Medical, is designed to help patients find relief from pain and suffering while providing a better experience with chronic pain therapy. The device also helps physicians address their patients' physical and emotional responses to pain. Additionally, BurstDR stimulation assists the physician in reducing paresthesia, a light tingling sensation sometimes experienced with traditional spinal cord stimulation.

According to Nomen Azeem M.D., Interventional Pain Management Specialist, "the ability of BurstDR stimulation to provide patients a more complete therapy experience is one of the key reasons Sarasota Orthopedic Associates was quick to adopt the therapy and offer it to our patients."

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy can transform quality of life for many people who are otherwise unable to find relief from chronic pain. However, BurstDR stimulation has been clinically proven to improve upon traditional SCS by generating superior pain relief. St. Jude Medical's proprietary BurstDR stimulation works differently from other stimulation designs, utilizing intermittent "burst" pulses designed to mimic the body's natural nerve impulse patterns. The goal of the therapy is to empower physicians in providing patients a new therapy option to improve outcomes and help patients secure relief from chronic pain.

Chronic pain is a complex and challenging condition for physicians to manage and a heavy burden for patients who find their lives profoundly limited by their pain. Many patients often move from treatment option to treatment option seeking pain relief, only to find a partial or incomplete response to therapy.

Nomen Azeem, MD is one of twelve physicians at Sarasota Orthopedic Associates. The group has four locations (Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Venice, and Bradenton) and offers same day appointments when needed. Appointments are available through the website www.SOA.md or by calling 941-951-2663. The commitment of Sarasota Orthopedic Associates is to get our patients back on their feet, back to work, back in the game, and back to life. For more information contact SWall@soa.md

FL Gulf Coast Physician First to Use New Chronic Pain Management Treatment

Interventional Pain Specialist, Dr. Nomen Azeem of Sarasota Orthopedic Associates, is the first physician on the Gulf Coast of Florida to use and implant a new neurostimulation device designed to provide pain relief in patients suffering from chronic intractable pain. The device, known as the St. Jude Medical Axium™ Neurostimulator System for dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation, was used to treat a 33-year-old patient suffering from chronic foot and ankle pain dating back to 2010. She underwent a total of 5 arthroscopic surgeries, physical therapy, and medications, all without relief. During her trial period in which the device is used temporarily to assess effectiveness in pain relief, she reported 100% pain relief for the first time in 7 years and was able to walk 2.5 miles without pain. Dr. Azeem then permanently implanted the St. Jude Medical Axium system.

Unlike traditional neurostimulation devices, the St. Jude Medical Axium system targets the DRG, a spinal structure densely populated with nerves that transmit information to the brain via the spinal cord. This first-of-its-kind device can target specific areas of the body otherwise underserved by traditional SCS such as the groin, hip, knee, and ankle/foot.

“As an interventional pain physician, I witness the debilitating physical and psychological effects of chronic pain which impact quality of life. All pain physicians worry about long term systemic effects of pain medications. Fortunately, the technological advances being made in the field of neuromodulation are astounding and have revolutionized how we think about treating neuropathic pain,” said Dr. Azeem, “We can now offer a device that, with advanced technology, allows the ability to block pain in very localized areas after injury or surgery. In the appropriate patient, we may be able to decrease the amount of pain medication necessary to control pain symptoms and even allow some to discontinue pain medications altogether.”

According to the Institute of Medicine, chronic pain affects more than 100 million Americans, an incidence rate which outpaces heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined. Research suggests that, in total, the condition costs the American population an estimated 515 million workdays annually and generates upwards of 40 million visits to physicians each year.

Sarasota Orthopedic Associates has four convenient locations in Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Venice, and Bradenton. We treat patients of all ages and offer same day appointments when needed. Appointments are made by calling 941-951-2663 or, by logging onto our website at www.SOA.md. Over-the Counter Medications for Osteoarthritis: Are They All the Same?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease of the joints that damages the bone and cartilage. It usually worsens over time and can cause pain and stiffness in your joints. OA is very common, and the change you might get it increases with age.

More than 80% of adults in the United States will have OA by age 80.

How Can I best Treat my OA?

OA can be treated with medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are examples of commonly used over-the-counter (OTC) NSAIDs. Because of the different ways in which each of these drugs work, you should think about possible side effects before choosing an OTC NSAID.

What Are the Possible Side Effects from NSAIDs?

NSAIDs can cause heart, stomach, or kidney problems. Intere3stingly, because of the way they work, an NSAID such as naproxen, which has a lower risk of causing heart problems, can have a higher risk of stomach problems such as irritation or ulcer. Similarly, the OTC NSAID ibuprofen and prescription NSAIDs such as diclofenac have a lower risk of causing stomach problems but a higher risk of causing heart problems such as heart attack.

How Do I Choose the Right NSAID for Me?

Based on guidelines written for rheumatologists – the bone and joint doctors – you should consider these factors.

  • Are you over age 75?
  • Do you have kidney problems?
  • Do you have a history of stomach irritation or ulcer?
